Movie Watcher's Log

2135: "Goodbye Lenin": I saw this with noire and hammercock. It's an impressive German piece about a mother who had a heart attack and fell into a coma during the fall of the Berlin Wall. Her son and daughter, fearing that the excitement will send her into another, fatal heart attack, shield her from the truth by convincing her that it is still Communist East Germany. There is some humor in the deception, but I saw more of the desperation of the son to hold on to a piece of his childhood which East Germany's past was part of. Not everyone embraced re-unification quickly and completely. It was about letting go. If only they integrated the bonus features into the main film. I liked the transition in the border guard patrol from heavy to non-existent as the film progressed.

2136: "Summer Stock": This was on Youtube. The plot was laughable. It was pretty much "Blah Blah Gene Kelly Blah Blah Judy Garland singing and dancing together Blah". It has the iconic "Come On Get Happy" scene which differed from the rest due to the unique filming schedule. (Garland had physical and mental issue during that time, and that one scene was filmed after a two-week recovery period, hence the change in appearance. See "Pretty in Pink" for another example.) You can tell that Garland was on drugs. Also, this film is further proof that no one names his/her son "Orville" anymore.
